Description

Oxytocin is produced in the human brain by the hypothalamus and secreted/stored in the pituitary gland. Oxytocin has many functions both physiological and behavioural in humans. It is responsible for the stretching and laxity of the cervix during childbirth, aids lactation and breastfeeding and helps the mother bond with a newborn.

Oxytocin has been accredited with many positive affects in human relationships, from increased trust and intimacy with others to sexual reproduction in both sexes. Oxytocin is released into the body during close intimacy with another, during such acts as hugging and even more so during sexual intercourse.

Oxytocin is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties and aids in wound healing.
